What is Linux?
Linux is an open source Operating System created in 1991 by Linux Torvalds. It is based on the Linux kernel and most of the Linux distribution is also based on this kernel. The main advantage of this operating system is that programmers and developers can use this Linux kernel to design their own customized operating systems as it is open source. Anyone can make changes to the source code and customize it according to their needs. It rapidly attracted developers and users those who are in technical fields. This operating system is free of cost and can be downloaded from Linux's official website. There are various distributions available in the Linux family such as:
What is Windows?
You would very much familiar with the Windows Operating System. It was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975 and is marketed by Microsoft. It provides a very easy graphical user interface for the users to operate. It is based on the Windows NT kernel. There are many versions of Windows such as Windows 1.0, 95, 2000, XP, 7, 8, 8.1, 10. Among these Windows 10 is the latest version which was launched in 25 July, 2015. This operating system is very popular and is widely used all over the world in schools, colleges, universities, homes etc. But this operating system is closed source and Microsoft doesn't provide access to change or modify the system and it's resources. You have to buy this OS from it's website to use but in India most of the people use pirated one which I strictly do not recommend.
Windows v/s Linux:
1) As you know that Windows is widely used, it is specifically targeted to the common people. These people only know how to use the computer for their normal tasks such as creating documents, making a excel sheet, surfing internet and other works. But what about the technical people, developers, security analyst and hackers? To fulfill these requirements, Linux was created. Linux distributions such as Kali Linux and Arch Linux is specially designed for the hackers, crackers and penetration testers. It provides pre-installed tools for passwords attacks, information gathering of networks and much more. Whereas distributions such as Ubuntu Linux is for common people and used for normal purpose just like Windows.
2) Windows is a graphical user interface, which means it provides many buttons and has images and graphics through which you can identify and access your datas or content. Here, you have to click more rather than typing commands. But in Linux, it is just the opposite. Yes, it is also GUI but it is much more an Command Line Interface as you have to many commands in the terminal to do a particular task.
If you consider an example, your computer running on Windows platform has some software problems, then you can just click the troubleshoot button to make it function rightly. But comming to Linux, if your PC has some problems then you have to open the terminal and type a lot of commands to troubleshoot it.
3) Another difference in both the operating systems is the number of applications made for both of them. As a large number of people use Windows, then there will be also a large number of applications made for them. On the other hand, Linux having less number of users will also have less number of applications designed for them. Most of the companies are also not interested to make softwares for Linux as it have a low user base. The high-end games such as GTA-V and graphics software such as Sony Vegas Pro are only available for Windows.
However, now-a-days the companies are also focusing on Linux developing softwares for them.
